The Newport Centre, often known as the Newport Mall, is a retail mall in Jersey City, New Jersey, opened its doors in 1987. It’s a big part of the massive Newport, Jersey City, a mixed-use development over the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan. It is situated at 30 Mall Drive West and is bordered on the west by Henderson Street, the east by Mall Drive East, the south by 6th Street, and the north by Newport Parkway. It is one of Simon Property Group’s eleven shopping malls in New Jersey. The mall has 1,152,599 square feet of gross leasable space (107,080 m2). The super-regional mall is the first of its type in Hudson County. AMC Theatres, Sears, JCPenney, Macy’s, and Kohl.
The mall, which has four anchors and 167 other businesses and activities, was opened to the public in October 1987. Two of the four anchors, Sears and Stern’s, were running. Customers from Bergen County, whose blue laws keep retail malls closed on Sundays, and residents from the new Newport waterfront development and the surrounding area. The 1,200,000-square-foot (110,000-square-meter) complex is projected to attract a large number of visitors.
The mall first opened its doors on November 12, 1987. New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean, Senator Frank Lautenberg, and The Smurfs were among those that attended. The mall had 75 businesses on that day, including the two anchor shops, Sam Goody, Benetton, Eddie Bauer, and Hallmark.
The mall is accessible through the PATH’s Newport station and the Hudson–Bergen Light Rail’s Pavonia/Newport station, also serviced by New Jersey Transit buses. It serves the communities of Guttenberg, North Bergen, West New York, and Union City in North Hudson.
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop ordered the Newport Centre to shut down on March 16, 2020. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy endorsed the temporary shutdown the following day, calling all malls in the state to shutter as well. However, on June 29, 2020, it will reopen.
The complex, next to four department stores – JCPenney, Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Sears – has over 130 specialized retailers ranging from women’s clothes to health and beauty to sports goods. On Level 3, Newport provides a variety of alternatives for every visitor’s taste buds, topped with an 11-screen cinema and a 1,000-seat Dining Pavilion with over 19 cafes. In addition, tax-free apparel shopping and a 3 1/2 percent sales tax are available at certain mall retailers at Newport Centre.
